In Sligo

Founded in 1836, the Sligo Champion is region's oldest
newspaper. It is published once a week on Wednesdays. Until
recently, the Champion was owned and run by the Townsend family,
however, it was purchased in 2008 by the Independent News and Media
group. The group owns a number of national newspapers in Ireland:
the Evening Herald, Irish Independent, Sunday
Independent, Sunday World and the Irish Daily Star,
as well as 14 regional titles, two free newspapers, and a magazine.
Since being purchased, the Champion has closed it's printing
operation in Sligo. Tghe paper's circulation is approximately
12,000. The paper is now printed in Dublin, but is continuing to
provide the most comprehensive local new coverage.

The Sligo Weekender
is a weekly local newspaper which is published every Tuesday in
Sligo. Although it primarily contains news of interest to Sligo town
and county, it also features news from the surrounding counties of
Leitrim, Roscommon, South Donegal and North Mayo. It was founded in
1984 by Brian McHugh as a free advertiser, but was purchased by the
Thomas Crosbie Holdings media and publishing group. The group also
publishes the Irish Examiner and Sunday Business Post
as well as 13 local papers and several radio stations.

The Sligo Post is a
free newspaper published in Sligo. The paper
specialises in local news and sport, as well as
sections such as: property, motoring, entertainment,
farming and fashion. First
published on 16 May,
2007 the paper comes out on Wednesdays. The Post
is owned by River Media who also publish The
Irish Times as well as Post papers in Monaghan,
Kildare, Leitrim, Donegal and Letterkenny Post.
They also own Ocean FM, Sligo's local radio station.
The Sligo Post also publishes a free digital copy of
the paper through its website, which is updated
every Wednesday morning.

Ocean FM is Sligo's
local radio station. It covers an area that includes
Sligo, Donegal, and Leitrim counties. Ocean started
broadcasting in October 2004 after it won the
license from North West Radio (NWR). Headquartered
in Collooney, Co. Sligo, the station also maintains
studios in Manorhamilton and Donegal town. The
station offers a variety of programming, all of
which is meant to reach a broad cross section of the
community.
